Mool Mantra — मूल मंत्र

The foundational mantra of Lord Bhairav. Chant 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or dusk facing the east, on a black woollen asana.

The seed mantra — most potent, most compressed form of Bhairav's divine energy. Chanting this single syllable invokes his complete presence.

Om Hrīṁ Baṭukāya Āpaduddharaṇāya Kuru Kuru Baṭukāya Hrīṁ

The Gayatri form bestows wisdom, courage, and inner illumination. Chant 21 or 108 times at sunrise.

शूलहस्ताय धीमहि
तन्नो भैरव प्रचोदयात्
Om Kālabhairavāya Vidmahe
Śūlahastāya Dhīmahi

Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam — काल भैरव अष्टकम्

Composed by Adi Shankaracharya. Eight verses glorifying Lord Kaal Bhairav, the ruler of Kashi. Recitation destroys all sins and grants moksha.

Verse 1

देवराजसेव्यमानपावनाङ्घ्रिपङ्कजं
व्यालयज्ञसूत्रमिन्दुशेखरं कृपाकरम्।
नारदादियोगिवृन्दवन्दितं दिगम्बरं
काशिकापुराधिनाथकालभैरवं भजे॥
Devarāja-sevyamāna-pāvanāṅghri-paṅkajaṁ
Vyāla-yajña-sūtram-indu-śekharaṁ kṛpākaram
Nāradādi-yogi-vṛnda-vanditaṁ digambaraṁ
Kāśikā-purādhinātha-kālabhairavaṁ bhaje
I worship Kaal Bhairav, the lord of Kashi, whose lotus feet are served by Indra himself, who wears serpents as sacred thread, bears the crescent moon, is compassionate, worshipped by sages like Narada, and is clad in the sky (directions) itself.

Verse 2

भानुकोटिभास्वरं भवाब्धितारकं परं
नीलकण्ठमीप्सितार्थदायकं त्रिलोचनम्।
कालकालमम्बुजाक्षमक्षशूलमक्षरं
काशिकापुराधिनाथकालभैरवं भजे॥
Bhānu-koṭi-bhāsvaraṁ bhavābdhi-tārakaṁ paraṁ
Nīlakaṇṭham-īpsitārtha-dāyakaṁ trilocanam
Kālakālam-ambujākṣam-akṣa-śūlam-akṣaraṁ
Kāśikā-purādhinātha-kālabhairavaṁ bhaje
I worship Kaal Bhairav, who blazes like a crore suns, who ferries souls across the ocean of existence, who has a blue throat, grants desires, has three eyes, is the destroyer of Yama (death), has lotus eyes, holds the skull and trident, and is imperishable.

Verse 3

शूलटङ्कपाशदण्डपाणिमादिकारणं
श्यामकायमादिदेवमक्षरं निरामयम्।
भीमविक्रमं प्रभुं विचित्रताण्डवप्रियं
काशिकापुराधिनाथकालभैरवं भजे॥
Śūla-ṭaṅka-pāśa-daṇḍa-pāṇim-ādi-kāraṇaṁ
Śyāma-kāyam-ādi-devam-akṣaraṁ nirāmayam
Bhīma-vikramaṁ prabhuṁ vicitra-tāṇḍava-priyaṁ
Kāśikā-purādhinātha-kālabhairavaṁ bhaje
I worship Kaal Bhairav, who holds trident, axe, noose and staff, who is the primordial cause, dark-bodied, the first deity, imperishable, free from disease, terrifying in might, the master, and lover of the divine Tandava dance.
